Kerala Houseboats are reconverted huge wooden boats, made in the form of the old rice carrying boats, used for tourist cruise journeys across the `backwaters’, a network of lakes, lagoons and rivers. Its modern avatar, the Kerala Houseboat is huge, weighs about 50 tons, fitted with all modern amenities, has bedrooms, toilets, sundecks, kitchen and conference halls!
Locally called `kettuvallom’, a Kerala houseboat is made with planks of the Wild Jack Tree and these planks are stitched together and bathed in fish oil to ensure longevity and to make it entirely leak proof.
Tourist cruises on a Kerala Houseboat are overnight journeys and provide glimpses of daily life of people who live within the `backwaters’.
